The meaning of Advent

Advent is the period of time before Christmas that celebrates the birth of Jesus.

For Christians, Advent starts on the Sunday which falls nearest to 30th November.

Advent is a time for people to have a countdown of days until Christmas begins.

​

Advent wreaths are displayed in churches and they contain five candles. These candles are lit one at a time on the four Sundays running up to Christmas day, leaving the fifth candle to be lit on Christmas day.

Lots of Children now have Advent calendars which contain chocolate for each day of December until Christmas day. These calendars are now popular with other items such as jewellery, candles and other accessories.
